Anniversary of Charley Patton's Recording Journey

Enjoy this illustration--'Charley Patton's Field.' This month 89 years ago, Charley Patton traveled to Grafton, Wisconsin to record 11 cuts for Paramount including "Magnolia Blues," "Devil Sent the Rain," and "Mean Black Cat Blues." H.C. Speir, producer of most early Delta blues sessions, said Charley's music was so clearly linked to the surroundings of the Cotton Belt South that Charley's recordings were "the first time America heard itself."
